Gaya Street Sunday Market (Pasar Tamu Jalan Gaya)

Sabah Kota Kinabalu Vacation Guide

Gaya Street Sunday Market (also called Pasar Tamu Jalan Gaya in Malay) is a weekly open-air street market in Kota Kinabalu. The market in Gaya street stretch for about 400 meter, from the City Council Building to the Sabah Tourism Board Building. In this market, you can buy various types of local products at bargain prices. The goods here range from arts and crafts, food and natural medicine products to women accessories such as pearls, precious stones, seashells, pets, fruits, coffee, tea and many more. There are also lots of imported fake sunglasses, crystal necklaces, watches and etc., so be careful with what you purchased.

The market opens every Sunday from about 6.00 am - 1.00 pm. The trip here will take about 1 hour; however, it is advisable to be there early to avoid the hot morning sun and the crowd, which started to build up from 9.00 am onwards, making this place hot and stuffy. Take some water, a hat and wear comfortable shoes when coming to this market, and be careful of your belongings while here.

This is a great place to roam if you happen to be in the city center with nothing to do on an early Sunday morning. Gaya Street Sunday Market offers a convenience and time saving place to hunt for souvenirs. Remember and do not be shy to negotiate with the seller to get the best price on the items on sale.

Getting There: Situated at Kota Kinabalu Central Business District, Gaya Street is just a short walk from anywhere around the city or you can take a taxi into KK town
